About this Class:

This is your chance to learn an incredibly useful skill that you always wanted. Whether you're a beginner who wants to get started in web development, a future designer looking to hand-code their concepts or a future marketer and entrepreneur who wants to get a head start in life. You'll have an incredible advantage knowing HTML and CSS early on. Oh, and colleges will love you too.

This workshop is designed for the beginner programmer so NO previous coding knowledge is required. We'll go over key coding terminology and principles, introduce HTML and CSS languages and what their functions are and how they work together.  We will then use that new knowledge to write our own code and create our own simple site during our workshop. 

Each class will be a 1 to 1 1/2 hour teaching plus the 1 1/2 to 2 hour “lab” for the rest of the time where students can work on an assignment related to what they just learned. (Total of 3 hours per day). These lab assignments are listed below.

Mon 6/19, 2-5pm:

  • Introduction to HTML & CSS
    • Tags, style properties
  • FTP & Uploading files to the server
    • Relationship between server and clients
  • Lab 1: Create your first webpage

 

Tue 6/20, 2-5pm:

  • Page Layout
    • Use <div> to create columns and structure of a web page
  • Lab 2: Movie Review Site

 

Wed 6/21, 2-5pm:

  • Page Layout continued
    • Create a multi-column layout like Instagram
  • Lab 3: Calendar Page

 

Thu 6/22, 2-5pm:

  • Break

 

Fri 6/23, 2-5pm:

  • Advanced CSS
    • CSS compounds
  • Create navigation menu and link multiple pages
  • Lab 4: Project Homepage

 

Mon 6/26, 2-5pm:

  • Full Width Page Layout
    • Modern web trends
    • CSS Positions
    • Using percentages
    • Lab 5: Project Subpage

 

Tue 6/27, 2-5pm:

  • Responsive Web Design
    • Make your website look good on the smartphones and tablets
    • Lab 4: Responsive webpage

 

Wed 6/28, 2-5pm:

  • Web Forms
  • Custom Fonts
  • Lab 6: Sign up Form

 

Thu 6/29, 2-5pm:

  • Introduction to Interactivity with CSS3, JavaScript and jQuery
  • jQuery Plugins
  • Complete Final Project

 

Fri 6/30, 2-5pm:

  • Final Project Presentations

 

Our Instructor:

Nayeon Kim (pronounced like nylon without the "l") is a lecturer at USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering who is passionate about teaching individuals from all backgrounds and industries how to code. She firmly believes basic coding skills, particularly for the web, is beneficial to anyone living in the 21st century. Nayeon has been coding for the web since the dawn of MySpace and has built websites and web applications for major motion picture studios such as Disney, Universal,  Fox and more.
